Skibbereen & West Carbery Golf Club

The golf club is situated in the heart of West Cork, a very beautiful part of Cork county. There are lovely views over the surrounding countryside - from the 12th hole you can see Skibbereen town to the east, to the south the wooded hills around the unique salt water lake of Lough Hyne, to the west the harbour at Baltimore and further west Mount Gabriel with the two air traffic control domes. With its proximity to the sea and the Gulf Stream this area enjoys a mild climate and the course is playable all year round.

The Club was founded in 1905 in Castlelands. It was affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1931. The Club moved to its present location at Licknavar in 1932 with the opening of a 9-hole course - this has become known as "The Old 9" as in 1992 another 9-holes were added, known as "The New 9"."The Old 9" is situated on the southern side of the Skibbereen to Baltimore road and is mainly a parkland style layout. "The New 9" is on the northern side of the road and has a more rugged rustic aspect with magnificant views of the surrounding countryside. Both 9's have now been integrated into a very pleasant 18-hole course with a mixture of long and relatively benign holes and shorter, tighter and more challenging holes.

The challenge is to get through what some members have called "Amen Corner" with your score intact!....these are holes 10 to 13 which have a habit of jumping up and biting you!
